Rum makes people think of tropical island vacations, pirates, beautiful beaches, hidden treasure and lovely ladies. We’ve put together this list of delicious and easy rum recipes that any beginner can make. Use your favorite brand of rum, be it Bacardi or Captain Morgan, and bring the fun and excitement of a tropical vacation to your home in a heartbeat.

How Rum is Made

Rum is produced by distilling fermented water and sugar. The sugar is taken from sugar cane and then this is allowed to ferment using the juice of the cane. Sometimes it’s also fermented using molasses or concentrated cane juice. Molasses is created after the sugar cane juice has been boiled. It appears sticky and tastes very sweet. Molasses is a by-product of sugar extraction.

The majority of rum is produced using molasses. The content of molasses is about half sugar and may also have plenty of minerals plus certain trace elements. These all add to the distinct flavour. Rums that are produced from cane juice – especially in regions like Haiti and Martinique – are known to have a smooth taste. What is known as the “wash”, or the cane juice, molasses and water, is allowed to ferment using either airborne wild yeasts or cultured yeast. The fermentation occurs anywhere from a day for light rum to months for the heavier and more full-bodied types of rum.
